The Digital Society Creation Research Division of the Data-Driven Innovation Initiative, in co-hosting with the Collaborative Research and Education Commons for Humanities and Social Sciences, will hold a symposium titled “What is Educational Data? Possibilities and Challenges Considered from Use Cases at Kyushu University.” For the keynote lecture, we have invited Professor Shimada, who is at the forefront of this field in Japan, conducting research on educational data utilization using generative AI at our university. In addition to his own research, Professor Shimada has also dedicated himself to formulating policies regarding the use of educational data.

Furthermore, in the panel discussion, we will have discussants from the fields of humanities, education, law, and economics share their perspectives on educational data based on their respective expertise to advance the discussion. I, Yamada, will humbly serve as the coordinator. The event will be held in a hybrid format, so if you have the time, please join us.

Educational data serves as a crucial clue for visualizing students’ learning processes and the reality of classroom instruction, thereby enhancing the quality of education. In this lecture, I will specifically introduce how educational data accumulated through learning management systems such as Moodle at Kyushu University is collected and analyzed, and how it is utilized for class improvement and learning support. Furthermore, I will discuss attempts to analyze learning situations using AI to provide feedback and early support to individual students, and examine the changes in the learning environment brought about by the use of educational data, as well as the technical and institutional challenges faced in promoting it.
