Greetings. We are pleased to announce that on March 6th, we will be holding the 3rd Symposium of the Division of Digital Society Creation, Headquarters for Data-Driven Innovation, titled “Work Styles in a Digital Society – Work Engagement -” at Nishijin Plaza.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the spread of remote work, side jobs, and the use of generative AI has significantly transformed how we work. Moving beyond an era where work is evaluated solely by time and output, the perspective of “whether one can be passionate about their work and feel a sense of purpose and pride” has become more important than ever. This state is known as “work engagement,” and it has been found to be deeply connected not only to physical and mental health but also to workplace atmosphere, teamwork, productivity, and creativity. On the other hand, challenges are increasing, such as the gap between an individual’s perceived sense of fulfillment and the reality of systems and contracts, as well as new ways of measuring and supporting work through AI and ICT. In this symposium, we will intersect the perspectives of law, psychology, and informatics to consider what “humane work styles” mean in the DX era and explore in an accessible way how we can support the motivation and well-being of workers.

As keynote speakers, we have invited Professor Akihito Shimazu of Keio University and Professor Tomohisa Nagata of the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan, who are at the forefront of research and activities regarding work engagement. They will share cutting-edge insights on this theme. Our panelists will also include experts who approach this topic from the fields of law, psychology, informatics, and human resources practice.

3rd Symposium
“Work Styles in a Digital Society – Work Engagement -”

In the post-pandemic era, our “work styles” have become more diverse and fluid than ever before, with the expansion of remote work, hybrid work, and side/concurrent jobs. In addition, as generative AI and data-driven decision-making spread, there is a growing momentum to rethink the value of labor and professional identity. Against this backdrop, “work engagement”—a state of being immersed in work and feeling vitality and pride—is attracting attention as a key to sustainable growth for both individuals and organizations, moving beyond evaluation axes based solely on labor hours or meritocracy.
The concept of work engagement is not limited to the framework of mental health measures; it is also utilized in many practices and studies related to organizational psychological safety, team dynamics, productivity, and creativity. Furthermore, in recent years, research focusing on the gap between “subjective work fulfillment” and “objective contract/system design,” as well as attempts at “work engagement measurement and intervention using AI and ICT,” have begun, making interdisciplinary discussion an urgent matter.
In this symposium, we will integrate specialized knowledge from fields such as law, psychology, and informatics to discuss the nature of “humane work styles” in the DX era, and explore from multiple perspectives how we can support the intrinsic motivation and well-being of workers at the intersection of system design, organizational development, and technology utilization.
