A New Book Chapter Published by Springer!

2025年06月10日

We are pleased to announce that a book chapter based on Ms. Hirata’s research—who completed her master’s degree in our lab—has been published by Springer! The chapter is an extended version of the full paper she presented at CELDA 2022.

At CELDA, full paper presenters are sometimes invited by the committee to expand their work into a book chapter. Ms. Hirata took on that challenge while also working on her master’s thesis and preparing a submission for LAK. I was initially a bit concerned about whether she could handle everything—but she pulled it off brilliantly. Truly impressive work!

Hirata, S., and Yamada, M. (2024). Automatic Speech Recognition System to Support Aural Vocabulary Learning. In: Sampson, D.G., Ifenthaler, D., Isaías, P. (eds) Smart Learning Environments in the Post Pandemic Era (pp. 89–113). Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-54207-7_6

In this study, Ms. Hirata developed and evaluated a vocabulary learning support system that uses automatic speech recognition to encourage learners to memorize words through spoken recall—a strategy known as aural verbal memory. To support the effective use of this strategy, she incorporated features related to self-regulated learning, such as monitoring, reflection, and learning planning.

She also presented this work as a poster at LAK 2024, where she received an Honorable Mention Poster Award.

If you have a chance, please take a look at the chapter. Thank you very much for your interest and support!
