I have finally decided to start wearing glasses. My visual acuity is 1.0 and 1.2, but the characters on the display were blurring and becoming very difficult to read; I couldn’t read them clearly unless I magnified my word processing software by about 1.5 times. I don’t have much trouble driving, looking at scenery, or reading paper books and academic papers, but reading text on a display has become painful. I am wearing glasses even now as I write this post.
I know that glasses don’t suit me, but I think it’s about time I accepted that it’s tough to read text on a display without them. Wow, I am so impressed! I can read the text quite clearly. It’s amazing how clear everything becomes! Wonderful!!
I guess I’m getting old. I wonder if the muscles that adjust my pupils are weakening? The optician told me that I have astigmatism, so that must be it. Come to think of it, a long time ago when I was working as a company employee doing programming, I often mistook the English lowercase letters ‘a’ and ‘u’, which frequently caused compilation errors… I wish it had just simply told me that the function name was wrong, but it would spit out a long list of associated errors, and I remember struggling, thinking, “I don’t understand this at all!” I recall feeling completely deflated when I realized it was just a simple mistake between ‘a’ and ‘u’. Perhaps those signs were there from a long time ago.
I was often told that reading books or playing games in the dark would worsen my eyesight, and since I was the kind of kid who would play Game Boy under the covers, I thought my eyesight would surely decline… but my vision remained between 1.5 and 2.0 until my mid-40s, so I was completely off guard, thinking I would be fine.
However, since my vision might decline even in face-to-face environments if I take my glasses off, I plan to take them off except when looking at a display.
