Presenting at the Japan Society for Educational Technology Spring Conference

I will be presenting at the Japan Society for Educational Technology (JSET) Spring Conference, which will be held at Kumamoto University on March 2nd and 3rd, 2024. Since it is being held in Kyushu, it feels quite special. To the conference organizing committee and everyone at Kumamoto University, thank you for your hard work. Having served as a board member in charge of the spring conference, I know that a great deal of difficult work continues behind the scenes. With about a month left until the event, I know you are in the final stages and likely exhausted, but please keep up the good work. I am looking forward to it.

Student Session (4): March 2nd, 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Tang Li, Masanori Yamada: “A Learning System for Giseigo Using Virtual Reality Technology: Design Based on the Classification of Emotional Expressions”

This is a presentation by second-year master’s student Li. Her research involves using VR to support the learning of onomatopoeia that expresses emotions, such as “waku-waku” (excited) or “doki-doki” (nervous). Based on the hypothesis that evoking emotions makes onomatopoeia easier to learn, she has developed and evaluated a VR environment. In this presentation, she will discuss the design of that environment.

Educational Learning Support Systems/AI (4): March 2nd, 1:30 PM – 3:20 PM

Saki Hirata, Masanori Yamada: “Development and Evaluation of an English Vocabulary Learning Support System Using Speech Recognition”

This is a presentation by second-year master’s student Hirata. She has developed and evaluated a system that incorporates the essence of Self-Regulated Learning theory—such as monitoring and self-reflection—into the speech memory strategy (a strategy for memorizing word forms and meanings while pronouncing them) using technologies like speech recognition. This time, she will present some of the findings from that research.

Self-Organized Session (3): March 3rd, 10:40 AM – 12:10 PM

Masanori Yamada, Xuewang Geng, Yuta Taniguchi: “What Can Be Seen Through Fine-Grained Learning Data Analysis? – Considering How to Analyze Learning Processes -”

We are holding a symposium as a self-organized session this time. Our university is conducting Learning Analytics research that integrates a digital teaching material distribution system with a learning dashboard as its data analysis infrastructure. We are collecting data at a fine-grained level, including page turns in teaching materials, markers, notes, and the use of the learning dashboard. In this session, we will introduce “B-QUBE,” the digital teaching material system officially operated by our university, and “Metaboard,” our learning dashboard. We will also introduce an example of learning process analysis using lag sequential analysis as a data analysis method. Finally, we will introduce “WEVL,” a programming learning environment we are using on an experimental basis, and discuss the significance of fine-grained data analysis in programming learning. We would like to conclude with a discussion with the audience.

Additionally, Kohei Tanaka of Nel & M Co., with whom I worked as an educational advisor for the Oita Prefecture ICT Education Supporter Project and previously for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “Future Classroom” project, has created a very interesting GPT-based bot that proposes curricula and lesson designs based on Instructional Design models using ChatGPT. When I suggested, “Why don’t you present it at the JSET National Conference and get feedback from participants to make it even better?” he actually applied to present, and he will be giving a presentation on the day.
