On Thursday, February 28th, starting at 1:30 PM, the Tohoku University Library training session, “Active Learning and the Future Role of University Libraries,” will be held. I have been invited to give a lecture at this event. We will begin with a lecture on the theory of active learning by Professor Satoru Yasunaga of Kurume University. While the term “active learning” has become widely used in recent years, it is associated with various theories, and understanding these theories provides a perspective on how to design such learning experiences.

I intend to speak from the perspective of what libraries should be as places for cultivating the human resources of the future. Regarding active learning, I would like to discuss how university libraries will change (or perhaps, as some might argue, “they may not need to change”) as places where learners can gather and grow, and as places for fostering future talent. I will also share what current Japanese university libraries can do, drawing on my own experiences. I hope to engage in discussions with library staff working on the front lines, staff involved in decision-making, and students if any are in attendance.

If you are available or in the area, please do join us. This will be my first visit to Miyagi Prefecture and Tohoku University. Although I have spoken virtually with Mr. Makoto Yonezawa, who invited me, this will be our first time meeting in person. I am looking forward to many things. Thank you very much.
